When the Homeworthy team visited our home in Bowral, NSW, it was a wonderful opportunity to share not just our home, but the philosophy behind it.
Set amongst the seasons and softness of the Southern Highlands, this home has been a generous backdrop to our lives for many years, and when you live amongst pieces gathered over time, your home becomes a reflection of your story and of the life shared with those you love.
If you’ve watched our YouTube videos, you’ll know we often finish with the phrase, “when designing a home you love, the beauty is in the detail.” And as Dave and I prepare to begin our next chapter, it feels especially meaningful to reflect on the details that have made this house a home.

The Beauty of Living with Collected Pieces
I’ve always loved living amongst pieces that hold personal history and unmistakable character.
It is often the imperfections that come with older pieces that feel the most welcoming to me. The gentle wear in timber, the softened edges, and the patina that only time can create all tell a story far richer than anything newly made. To me, they are evidence of a life lived.
Our home features a blend of Belgian and Transitional styles, interwoven with antique and handcrafted pieces collected from our travels. Over time, we’ve found ourselves returning to a few simple principles that quietly shape how each space feels. We often refer to them as our 5 Ls of Styling, and they naturally weave their way through every room.
Pieces That Tell a Story
Over the years, certain pieces have become part of the rhythm of our home. These are the pieces we hold onto, the ones that feel deeply personal.
An heirloom from a grandparent.
A hand-stitched quilt my mother made for my children.
A weathered clock face found at a French flea market.
A 17th-century Swedish desk in the most beautiful blue, discovered in a small antique shop and with me now for over 25 years, adapting over time from a work desk to a bedside chest.
There are also smaller pieces that carry just as much meaning, such as our handcrafted open-bell paper votives sourced from a Paris trade fair, collections of decoy ducks, old oil portraits, antique candleholders, and artwork painted by a friend.
In our home, even the unseen elements play a role in how a space feels. Scent has become part of that experience. La Promeneuse from Trudon, paired with my favourite Ernesto fragrance, adds an atmospheric layer and has become part of my morning ritual.
Lighting, too, plays an important role. Layered lighting — a combination of ambient, accent, task, and decorative sources — helps shape the ambience and allows it to shift softly throughout the day.

Embracing the Seasons
Bringing natural materials and living energy into the home is something we’ve always valued. It connects a space to the seasons and to the natural world.
This might be fresh flowers or greenery, but just as often it’s something simple and foraged, such as:
- Shells or driftwood gathered by the sea.
- Pinecones collected on a weekend away.
- Branches fallen from the garden, arranged on a table.
