The Three Winter Layers
The First Layer: Textiles
Warmth begins, quite literally, with the textiles we choose, both for their tactile and visual quality. The simplest way to bring warmth into a room is to fill it with sumptuous textiles: wool, cashmere, velvet, and the kind of supersoft bedding, blankets, and robes you sink into.
This doesn't mean you have to put away your lighter, breathable fabrics such as linens and cottons. Instead, add contrast, pairing a chunky wool knit beside a linen cushion, a weighty comforter with a velvet cushion, a sheepskin against a timber floor; it is this interplay of textiles and materials that caters to the change of seasons.

The Second Layer: Lighting
As always, layered lighting is essential, and in the cooler months, it is perhaps the most transformative layer of all. Overhead lighting, for all its usefulness, tends to create a harsh feel at nighttime, unless on a dimmer and paired with low-level light sources. The remedy is to create several small pools of light rather than a single bright source overhead.
If you have limited access to power points, portable table lamps are a beautiful option, allowing you to carry warmth from room to room, while real or battery-operated candles bring a gentle glow and ambience.
Wall sconces, swing-arm lamps, and dimmer switches, wherever possible, each add to the effect. This can also be emulated using smart light globes, which often let you adjust the hue and brightness from your phone or with a remote.

The Third Layer: Scent
The final layer is the one most often overlooked, and yet it is a lovely reminder that a truly welcoming home is multi-sensory and transportive. Scent reaches us before we have consciously noticed it, and in winter, the right fragrance can shift our mood the moment we step through the door.
My personal favourite is Ernesto by Trudon. I burn it all year, though it feels especially at home in winter; lighting the La Promeneuse with its cameos has become my favourite after-work ritual. It comes, too, as a candle, reed diffuser, and room spray.
